Building the Church of God: Not by Might, but by the Spirit

In a world driven by intelligence, talent, and wealth, it’s easy to assume that these assets alone can build great institutions. With enough resources, we can construct impressive buildings, launch ambitious projects, and create systems that dazzle with efficiency. But when it comes to building the Church of God—the true body of Christ—human effort alone falls short. The Church is not a monument to human achievement; it is a living, breathing testimony to the power of the Holy Spirit.

 The Spirit, Not Strategy

We can gather the brightest minds, the most skilled hands, and the deepest pockets, yet without the Spirit of God, we are merely erecting structures devoid of life. The spread of the gospel, the transformation of hearts, and the birth of repentance are not the fruits of human intellect—they are the unmistakable work of the Holy Spirit.

It is the Spirit who draws people to Christ through the Word. When the Creator is born in the temple of a man’s heart, the Holy Spirit begins to dwell within him. From that moment, a divine transformation unfolds. No force—political, intellectual, or spiritual—can halt this work. It is unstoppable, uncontainable, and undeniably supernatural.

 A New Creation

When the Holy Spirit enters a person, he becomes a new creation. His nature changes. His lifestyle shifts. His culture is redefined. He walks a new path, not because of human persuasion, but because of divine intervention. This is not behaviour modification—it is spiritual rebirth.

Consider Paul and Silas, imprisoned for preaching the gospel. Their chains did not silence the Spirit. Instead, their suffering became the catalyst for the jailer’s conversion. The Spirit works in prisons, palaces, and places of pain. It cannot be confined.

 Entrusting the Blueprint to God

Just as we entrust an architect to build a house with precision, we must entrust our lives and ministries to God. If we hand over our plans to someone unqualified, the result is chaos. But when we surrender our vision to God, He builds with beauty and purpose.

God’s thoughts are not our thoughts. His ways are higher. When we align our plans with His will, the Holy Spirit begins a work that leads to true success—not worldly applause, but eternal impact. Human logic may lead to tension, failure, and loss. But Spirit-led surrender leads to peace, fruitfulness, and joy.

 The Temple Within

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We are called to present them as living sacrifices—holy and pleasing to God. When we walk in the Spirit, the desires of the flesh lose their grip. The Spirit takes control, guiding us in righteousness and truth.

A Spirit-filled life glorifies God. It does not seek self-exaltation. When we try to lift ourselves up, we dishonour the name of Jesus. But when we humble ourselves and allow the Spirit to work through us, God is glorified, and His name is honoured.

 Spirit-Led Ministry: Indestructible

Ministry led by the Spirit cannot be destroyed by the enemy. Human-led efforts are vulnerable to attack, but Spirit-led missions are fortified by divine power. The enemy may plot in secret, but the Spirit reveals hidden things. Just as Elisha discerned the enemy’s plans and protected Israel, the Spirit empowers us to overcome every

Conclusion

The Church of God is not built by human hands—it is built by surrendered hearts. Intelligence, talent, and money may build institutions, but only the Spirit of God can build the Church. Let us be people who walk in the Spirit, surrender to His will, and glorify the name of Jesus in all we do. For when the Spirit moves, no power in heaven or on earth can stand against it.

Hermeneutics to Homiletics - There is a necessary place for laughter in life. Ecclesiastes 3:4 says that, “There’s a time to weep and a time to laugh.” There is a time for humor. Laughter and wit are both common graces granted to us so that we can enjoy the ironies and absurdities of life. There are many appropriate moments when laughter (and the humor that fuels it) can be a profound blessing, especially to those who are going through prolonged trials. “A cheerful heart is a good medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22). Therefore, even sermons can occasionally contain humor.
