Katra/Jammu, June 5 – Preparations are in full swing as Prime Minister Narendra Modi gears up for his high-profile visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. This marks his first trip to the Union Territory since the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a massive counter-offensive in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists.
In anticipation of the Prime Minister's arrival, the region has been placed under a multi-layered security cover, with intense surveillance and patrols in sensitive areas. Officials report that advanced security tools, including drones and high-tech monitoring systems, have been deployed, while ground forces comprising police, paramilitary, and intelligence agencies are operating in close coordination to secure the visit.

Railway Milestone and Infrastructure Push
One of the key highlights of the visit will be the formal inauguration of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental 272-km project that connects the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail. The project, costing approximately ₹43,780 crore, features 36 tunnels spanning 119 km and 943 bridges, including engineering marvels like the Chenab Bridge and India’s first cable-stayed Anji Bridge.
PM Modi will flag off Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar, offering high-speed, comfortable travel options to pilgrims, tourists, and residents.
In addition, the Prime Minister is expected to dedicate and lay foundation stones for development projects exceeding ₹46,000 crore. These include key road infrastructure upgrades in border areas, such as the widening of NH-701 between Rafiabad and Kupwara, and the construction of the Shopian bypass on NH-444. Two new flyovers in Srinagar—at Sangrama and Bemina junctions—are also slated for inauguration, aimed at easing city traffic congestion.
Healthcare and Regional Development
Another major announcement will be the establishment of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra. With a projected investment of over ₹350 crore, this will be the first medical college in Reasi district and is expected to significantly improve healthcare access and quality in the region.
Security Tightened Across the UT
Authorities have declared a high alert across Jammu and Kashmir in the lead-up to the visit. Area domination exercises, vehicle checks, and intensified raids targeting suspected Over Ground Workers and relatives of cross-border militants have been ramped up. Security forces are also focusing on sealing infiltration routes and monitoring border movement.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Shiv Kumar, who recently visited border districts in the Jammu-Kathua-Samba range, has directed on-ground teams to maintain heightened alertness.
Traffic restrictions are expected in and around Katra, particularly on roads leading to the stadium where the Prime Minister will address a public rally. Commuters have been advised to follow updates regarding diversions and road closures on Friday.
The extensive development announcements and enhanced security underscore the significance of Modi’s visit, reflecting both strategic intent and developmental focus for the region.
