New Delhi, June 6 – Marking World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fleet of 200 electric buses in the national capital on Thursday, reinforcing the government’s push toward eco-friendly urban transport and sustainable development.
The green initiative, a joint effort by the Delhi government and central authorities, was unveiled at a public event attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.
During the launch, PM Modi emphasized that the introduction of electric buses will not only help in reducing pollution but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents in the capital. “This step strengthens our vision for a clean and green Delhi, making urban mobility smarter, cleaner, and more accessible,” he stated.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Building a clean and green Delhi! Flagged off electric buses under an initiative of the Delhi government aimed at boosting sustainable development and clean urban mobility. Additionally, this will also improve ‘Ease of Living’ for the people of Delhi.”
The Prime Minister also took part in an environmental drive by planting a sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in New Delhi under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. The plantation was conducted as part of the Aravalli Green Wall Project, which aims to rejuvenate the 700-kilometre-long Aravalli range through reforestation efforts.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav praised the dual significance of the occasion, calling it a symbol of India’s ongoing environmental commitment. “The electric buses and plantation initiative reflect India’s resolve to combine infrastructure development with ecological responsibility,” he posted on X.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta extended her gratitude to the Prime Minister for his support. “Your encouragement boosts Delhi’s mission to become a cleaner and greener city. We are committed to a future-ready Delhi that aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat, where growth and environmental care go hand in hand,” she said.
With the latest addition, Delhi’s electric bus fleet under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) now stands at 2,095, forming a majority of the 3,266-strong DTC fleet, the remainder comprising 1,371 CNG-powered buses.
This rollout of e-buses not only advances Delhi’s sustainable transport goals but also reflects the broader national commitment to clean energy and urban innovation.
