Hyderabad, June 16:
A Lufthansa flight en route to Hyderabad was forced to abort its journey and return to Frankfurt following a mid-air bomb threat, according to officials familiar with the incident.
Flight LH752, which departed from Frankfurt at approximately 2:14 pm local time on Sunday, was scheduled to arrive at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport early Monday morning. However, a few hours into its journey, the aircraft reversed course and headed back to Germany, causing anxiety among passengers and prompting an international security response.
Airport authorities in Hyderabad confirmed that the decision to turn around was made after a bomb threat was reported while the flight was still outside Indian airspace. “The flight returned to its origin because of a bomb threat received while the aircraft was still en route,” an official at the Hyderabad airport told ANI.
Initially, Lufthansa representatives stated that the flight was unable to secure landing permission in Hyderabad, which led to the return. However, subsequent reports confirmed that the threat assessment occurred mid-flight, necessitating immediate precautionary measures.
A passenger aboard the flight, who was traveling from the United States to visit family in Hyderabad, described the situation as calm despite the alarming circumstances. Speaking from Frankfurt after landing, she told PTI, “We were about two hours into the flight when they informed us we were turning back. They didn’t give much detail at that time. Now we’ve landed safely, and Lufthansa has arranged accommodation for us. We’re expected to depart again tomorrow at 10 am.”
Flight tracking websites corroborated the abrupt change in flight path, showing the aircraft's turnaround mid-route before landing safely at Frankfurt, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs.
Officials at Hyderabad's Air Traffic Control reported receiving a message from Lufthansa indicating the plane’s return shortly after takeoff. Security agencies are investigating the nature and source of the threat, though further details remain undisclosed at this time.
No injuries or safety incidents were reported during the flight, and Lufthansa has assured passengers of all necessary support and rescheduled departures.
